Campground Overview
About Chilkat State Park
Perched on a rugged peninsula between the Chilkat and Chilkoot Inlets, Chilkat State Park Campground in Haines, Alaska, defies the expectations of typical camping with its unparalleled glacier vistas, abundant wildlife, and untouched Alaskan wilderness. This remote escape offers an intimate connection to nature on its 9,837 acres of forested land, where campers can revel in the serenity of a pristine landscape while enjoying access to the essentials for a memorable outdoor experience.
The campground features 35 sites, including four walk-ins, accessible via a steep gravel road culminating in a 14% grade descent, adding an adventurous note to the journey. While the sites provide only basic amenities such as fire rings, water pumps, and vault toilets, the reward is access to stunning views of Rainbow and Davidson Glaciers and opportunities for diverse outdoor pursuits. A boat launch opens up the waterways for fishing, kayaking, or wildlife spotting, where bald eagles, sea lions, and even whales may make an appearance. Trails like Seduction Point offer scenic hikes along the coastline, while the log cabin visitor center, complete with spotting scopes, brings distant wildlife and glaciers into view.
Located just seven miles south of Haines along Mud Bay Road, the campground is ideally situated for day trips to the nearby Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve or exploring Haines’ charming local businesses. Chilkat State Park is an ideal choice for those seeking a weekend getaway or an extended Alaskan adventure, renowned for its rich wildlife, world-class salmon fishing, and breathtaking mountain and water landscapes.
