About Indian Well Campground
Indian Well Campground offers a unique opportunity to camp amidst ancient lava flows, with direct access to fascinating geological wonders and a striking high desert landscape. This first-come, first-served campground in Lava Beds National Monument provides a base for exploring over 800 lava tube caves, Native American rock art sites, and diverse wildlife habitats.
The 43 campsites are set in a rugged, open area surrounded by volcanic formations, providing a sense of isolation despite being just a half-mile from the visitor center. Each site features a picnic table, fire ring, and cooking grill, accommodating tents and RVs up to 30 feet. The campground's layout and amenities cater to both casual weekend visitors and dedicated cave explorers seeking an extended stay to fully experience the monument's geological marvels.
Located in northeastern California, Indian Well Campground is approximately 30 miles from the town of Tulelake. The campground's position within Lava Beds National Monument puts visitors in prime position to explore unique features like Mushpot Cave, with its interpretive lighting, and the historic Captain Jack's Stronghold. The area's clear, dark skies also make it an excellent spot for stargazing, offering campers a chance to witness the Milky Way in all its glory on cloudless nights.
