About Lake Thompson Recreation Area
What if your next camping destination offered not just a peaceful lakeside retreat, but also a place steeped in historical significance and abundant recreational opportunities? Lake Thompson Recreation Area, located six miles southwest of Lake Preston, South Dakota, provides just that along the scenic shoreline of one of the state’s largest lakes, designated as a National Natural Landmark.
This campground boasts 103 sites, including 97 with electrical hookups, 6 designated for tents, and 5 cozy camping cabins. The spacious, open layout means little shade, but the lakeside positioning ensures easy access to water activities like fishing, kayaking, and boating, with a well-maintained boat ramp and fish cleaning station onsite. Families will appreciate the playground, hiking and biking trails, and additional amenities such as restrooms, showers, and picnic facilities, while wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy birdwatching along the serene multi-use trails.
Lake Thompson is a year-round haven for nature lovers and history buffs alike and is closely tied to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s legacy in the nearby De Smet area, just a short drive away. With over 2.5 miles of trails and 44 miles of lake shoreline, it’s perfect for weekend getaways, fishing trips, or leisurely lakefront escapes.
