Nauvoo State Park defies typical camping expectations with its fusion of historical charm, lush natural settings, and the tranquil beauty of Lake Horton near the Mississippi River. Situated on 148 acres in western Illinois, this campground offers a rich mix of cultural heritage and outdoor recreation, making it an ideal stop for history enthusiasts, anglers, and nature lovers alike.
The campground boasts 150 well-maintained sites, split between Class A spaces with modern amenities and more rustic Class B options, as well as dedicated group areas for gatherings. The centerpiece is the serene 13-acre Lake Horton, which is perfect for fishing largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill, along with a scenic trail that encircles its shoreline. Visitors can explore a 1.5-mile Lake Trail, enjoy two picnic and playground areas spanning 20 acres, or immerse themselves in the history of the region at the on-site Nauvoo Museum, which features artifacts and the only public wine cellar in Nauvoo.
Located just south of the historic town of Nauvoo and steps from the Mississippi River, Nauvoo State Park places guests within easy reach of quaint local shops, fascinating religious sites, and even annual festivities like the Nauvoo Grape Festival.
