About Nerstrand Big Woods State Park
How does a campground that blends shaded serenity, distinctive hardwood forests, and access to a charming hidden waterfall sound? Nerstrand Big Woods State Park Campground in southern Minnesota offers just that, providing a peaceful retreat just an hour south of the Twin Cities. This campground is perfect for campers seeking privacy, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure, all while enjoying convenient facilities.
The campground features 51 sites, including 27 with 30-amp electric hookups, accommodating tents, trailers, and RVs up to 70 feet. Additionally, there are four walk-in sites hidden amidst the wooded canopy for those craving a more rustic experience. Each site includes essentials such as a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Modern amenities are available seasonally, with flush toilets, showers, and a dump station ensuring comfort. Visitors can also explore an 11-mile network of trails, highlighted by the picturesque Hidden Falls and vibrant spring wildflowers, including the rare dwarf trout lily. For winter enthusiasts, the park transforms into a haven for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
Located just outside the quiet town of Nerstrand, the park preserves one of the last stands of Minnesota’s Big Woods, a pre-settlement maple-basswood forest. Its seclusion and proximity to nearby attractions like Northfield’s farmers market offer campers a mix of tranquility and local culture, making it ideal for weekend getaways or nature-filled vacations.
