Campground Overview
About Pine River Campground
Isolated at the terminus of Forest Road 602, Pine River Campground offers a rugged retreat for campers seeking a serene, backcountry experience surrounded by striking views of the Pine River Valley and the rugged landscapes of the San Juan National Forest. With just six primitive campsites designed for tents or small RVs, this campground is a haven for those who value solitude, natural beauty, and direct access to wilderness trails.
Situated at the trailhead for the Pine River Trail (#523), the campground serves as a gateway to outdoor adventures, including hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. The Pine River Trail traverses private land for nearly three miles before entering the Weminuche Wilderness, where it follows the river for six miles and intersects the Lake Creek Trail leading to Emerald Lake. While the campsites provide fire rings, picnic tables, and a single vault toilet, there is no potable water, making this a true primitive camping experience. Visitors should also note that public access to the river is unavailable until reaching the wilderness area.
Approximately 30 minutes from Bayfield, Colorado, the campground offers a balance of remoteness and accessibility. Nearby Vallecito Lake provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and family-friendly recreation, complementing the area’s stunning alpine scenery. Pine River Campground is ideal for short stopovers, weekend escapes, or as a basecamp for extended wilderness exploration.
