Campground Overview
About Elbert Creek Campground
Elbert Creek Campground offers a high-altitude retreat adjacent to two of Colorado's most iconic peaks, combining rugged mountain access with essential amenities for hikers and campers. The 17 first-come, first-served sites sit at 10,000 feet near the Mount Elbert and Mount Massive trailheads, with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Dense stands of conifers provide natural screening between sites, though the proximity to popular 14er trails ensures steady foot traffic.
The campground’s defining feature is its direct access to alpine terrain—wildflower meadows and Emerald Lake lie within a short hike, while the Arkansas River’s headwaters offer Class I-V rapids 30 minutes north near Leadville. Road conditions vary; the final stretch involves an unmaintained dirt road passable by most vehicles in summer. Summer afternoon thunderstorms and rapid temperature drops are typical at this elevation, requiring layered preparation. Dogs must be leashed, and OHVs are restricted to designated routes.
Leadville’s historic mining-town charm—including supply stops and cultural landmarks—is a 15-minute drive north. Given its high demand among peak-baggers, arrivals before midday are advisable during the May–September season. The combination of strategic location and no-frills functionality positions Elbert Creek as a utilitarian basecamp for serious alpine pursuits.
