Halfmoon West Campground

A rugged retreat for outdoor enthusiasts, Halfmoon West Campground in Leadville, Colorado, combines rustic charm, proximity to iconic peaks, and a serene forested location. Situated at 9,900 feet along the scenic Halfmoon Road, this first-come, first-served campground features 17 sites ideal for hikers aiming to conquer Mount Elbert and Mount Massive—the tallest peaks in Colorado.

Vault toilets are available, and water is accessible via a hand-pump, though the high-altitude location means campers should prepare for potential altitude sickness. The dense pine forests provide a sense of seclusion, while the medium-heavy use reflects its popularity during the peak season from May to September.
